Seeing Stars

Last night we took Caedmon down to the Square to see the Christmas lights.

He was particularly enamored with them because of the Curious George episode he’s been watching where George counts stars. So to him, they were all “tars” or “yites.”

To say he was busy would be an understatement. With the combination of the low light/flash issue and a moving boy, we didn’t get many good photos.

My attempt at a family self-portrait: FAIL. Ha! Sorry, Husband!DSC07373 And the rest weren’t much better.DSC07359DSC07347DSC07319DSC07314

**Revised to add: Yes, I am aware that my son is in public wearing Crocs along with a winter coat. There are just some things that aren't worth a fight.** Pin It

A Father’s Day Recap

Ya’ll know I struggled with this whole Father’s Day gift thing. I’ve been obsessing over it for weeks, nay months. I started thinking about it long before Mother’s Day, even.

A few weeks ago as C and I were playing with blocks together in his room, I wondered aloud, “What should we get Daddy for Father’s Day?” No joke, C turned, looked me in the face, and said, “A bebe.”

I quickly mumbled something about it being a little late for this year, so we’d have to think of something else. He knocked over my tower of blocks and quickly forgot about the whole thing.

I then began to wonder if my son does indeed have the gift of prophecy and knew something I didn’t. And then I reminded myself that it had been two days since I’d left the house and hours since I’d spoken to someone who used complete sentences, so I was probably giving his response too much credence.

Just so there’s no confusion, Daddy didn’t get a “bebe” for Father’s Day.

But here’s what he did get.

We started our celebration early, as we tend to do around here. So on Saturday we pulled out the gifts.

A couple seasons of Seinfeld to bolster our collection. We love watching this show together. As I’ve said before, just about everything in life relates back to a Seinfeld episode.

Because we are oh so cultured and high class.DSC03691(By the way, we were given Seinfeld Scene-It for Christmas and haven’t found anyone brave enough to play it with us. If you have some mad skillz with Seinfeld (or don’t mind playing with us anyway), let me know and we’ll plan a social gathering.)

And C made this for him at KDO before they let out for the year in May. Props to his teachers for thinking ahead! It’s a plaster disc with C’s footprints as a butterfly. Isn’t this thing just adorable? Husband is taking it to his office to display proudly.DSC03692 We also took Husband out to eat. I won’t even go into the whole saga of how we planned to go to a certain place, then didn’t. And actually drove to a second restaurant, saw the line and decided not to go in and ended up at a third place.

It was still good.

But I do have a bone to pick with Cold Stone Creamery. How dare they be out of their luscious Ice Cream Cupcakes on Father’s Day Weekend? I wanted to bring home half a dozen of those babies for $9.99, and when I got there I was told they were out. Until Monday. So I bought a small ice cream cake instead. For twice the price.

I guess I should pick that bone with myself. Either that or stamp “sucker” in big letters across my forehead.

And the crowning glory of our Father’s Day celebration, C surprised Daddy with one more thing by wearing his Father’s Day shirt to church. Everybody loved it. How can you not?DSC03698And yes, I realize the picture is blurry, but the boy refused to be still. Here’s a sample of the other quality photography from yesterday morning.DSC03706Sunday morning was followed up with my boys spending some quality time together in the pool, Oz included.

All in all, I think we had a great Father’s Day celebration.

Speed Turtle

For his first birthday, we got C a push/ride Tonka truck. After he learned to walk, the Tonka truck was pretty much cast aside for a while.

But recently C’s been riding it pretty frequently. And Husband was distressed that the front wheels don’t turn, causing a lot of forward-and-back driving. And a lot of running into the coffee table. Boring, apparently.

Our child is so deprived.

So on their weekly Saturday morning time together (in which I am buried under the covers), Husband and C went on a little shopping trip. And came home with this.Turtle

Yep, it’s a Radio Flyer Turtle. First of all, I didn’t know Radio Flyer made turtles. And secondly, a turtle? Really?

“Look Mom, I’m riding on one of the slowest land animals known to man! Woo hoo, this is fun!”

Thirdly, it was on clearance sale, so I suppose those first two things are forgiven.

I must say though, for a turtle, this thing moves. The four wheels move just fine on the carpet, but on the tile you’d better watch out or else he’ll just scoot his little shell out from under C’s little hiney.

He’s had a few crash and burns, but he gets right back on, although a little slower and a bit more cautious. For about 15 seconds.

One of his favorite features, however, is not anything to do with actually riding the thing. It’s that the shell/seat opens up and he can store things in there. I can’t tell you how many times this week I’ve found his sippy cup in there after turning the house upside down looking for it.

I guess I should start looking in the Turtle first.

Hypothermia In May

Remember how we got a jump on summer? The saga continues.

In case you weren’t aware, it’s been raining here. For forever. I’m talking the kind of rain where you have to pick the Bible up and remind yourself that God promised to never again destroy the earth via flood.

Any peeks of sunshine we’ve gotten lately have not only been few and far between, but celebrated wildly.

So on one of our rare days where we thought we might see the giant ball of gas burning billions of miles away, Husband decided that C’s swimming pool needed to make its summer debut.

Nevermind that the temperature wasn’t supposed to break 70. And nevermind that somebody warned that it would be a tad frigid, even after the “sun” had time to warm the water.

No, these boys needed to swim. And “swim” they did. DSC03141DSC03160 Oz preferred to laze in the sun and watch the action.DSC03166DSC03174The joyous swim excursion lasted all of about six minutes.

And it’s a good thing it was short lived. C’s little appendages were beginning to turn blue.

For now the pool has been retired. Unless, of course, we need to pull it out to use as a life boat.

When Weeds Aren’t

There are a lot of things I’m looking forward to as a Mom.

One thing I love is watching Husband teach C things. Not necessarily the big things.

My guys were out in the yard the other day while I was getting dinner ready. It wasn’t long before C came in the back door, with Husband following closely behind.

“Give it to Mama,” Husband told him.

C pulled something away from his slobbery chin and presented it to me. DSC02316I love this dandelion.

Insert Snappy Music Title Here

The Other, Other Woman has a hold on my son, too.

I love watching my men make music together. Of course, C’s version of the music they’re making is much different than what Husband is going for.

But hey, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right? Or in this case, the ear.

DSC02110 Here they are, tuning up and getting ready. C’s brought along a book, but I don’t think that’s the kind that has any songs in it.
