Cling Isn’t Just For Static

I know kids go through phases. And some of them are cuter than others.

We have been in the midst of an ugly phase.

I believe it’s the phase “They” call Separation Anxiety.

I call it clinginess. I call it nobody-but-Momma-can-talk-to-me-or-do-anything-for-me. I call it Momma-can’t-leave-my-sight-unless-I-say-so.

I also call it maddening. And yet a little bit sweet at the same time.

C has always been a shy one. He’s definitely not a party starter, but he’ll join in if given a little time to warm up.

But while we were in Branson with the family? He didn’t want to have anything to do with any of them. He even stayed in our bedroom and didn’t want to join the rest of the family – not even to eat.

It’s really sweet that my boy loves me enough to cling to my legs while I’m fixing dinner crying, “Momma! Momma! Up! Pees!” It’s also a bit taxing on my nerves.

But he’s starting to come out of the “Momma” phase, and has really become very interested in hanging out with his Daddy. And that makes me happy – for many reasons.

One of them might possibly be that I can go to the bathroom by myself every once in a while without a toddler meltdown on the other side of the door.

It’s just another sign that my boy is growing up. I have a feeling one of our next challenges will be climbing out of the crib.

If anybody’s got any advice on that one, I’d love to hear it.

  1. I think this phase is particularly difficult for the mom with only one child. When you have the next kid - you can always make C pay for his raisin - and make him keep the other kid entertained! I remember when you were "cling" - it was HORRIBLE. I had to handwash all our dishes - so I was in the kitchen a LONG time...thus...my revenge...no automatic dishwasher when you were a teenager. You were clingy a few months - I think you had to handwash dishes a few years! Payback's are ....
