The Big Brother

It’s not what you think.

The Bebe is back.

Caedmon’s “bebe” has been on a shelf for several months. But last week, Caedmon surprised me by bringing the doll to me, telling me it was crying. He wanted me to rock the baby. So I did.

Next, he wanted a bottle for the baby. But we don’t really have accessories for the bebe and I put Caedmon’s bottles away long ago. So I had to tell him I didn’t have a bottle for the baby. He said, “Uh huh!” and ran out of the room. Caedmon promptly returned with a baby bottle. It was the one I picked up at church for our “baby bottle campaign” (You fill the bottle with a contribution, then return it to the church to help support local pregnancy crisis centers.) and hadn’t yet returned it. So for the last several days, it’s been the bebe’s.

We took the bebe with us to a lunch appointment. In the car, Caedmon told me the baby was crying and he needed to find his mommy. I asked him who the baby’s mommy was, and he said, “You that baby’s Mommy.”

I responded, “Well, that makes you the big brother.” Caedmon’s answer was, “That’s right. I the brother.”

Caedmon’s been a great “big brother” to the bebe, who now has the name Andy. (The kid on Toy Story.) He pushed Andy around in the cart.

We made Andy a bed, and Caedmon makes sure he goes down for a nap, along with his cup (what Caedmon calls the bottle now) and a nite-nite.

Caedmon also has ridden Andy around on his turtle. And who doesn’t love a ride on a turtle?

We’ll see how long Andy hangs around. I have a feeling if he spends much more time here, he’ll start getting blamed for stuff. Isn’t that what happens to the little brother?
