What Do You Pray For Your Kids?

My worst fear as a parent is not what I’m doing to/for my child. It’s what I’m not doing. Maybe because I just don’t know what to do. Maybe because I don’t realize how important that thing I’m not doing may actually be.

And my biggest fear in the not doing is this: What if I don’t ask God for the right things where Caedmon is concerned?

What do you say? What do you ask for? What should you ask for? God tells us that we have not because we ask not, so I’m pretty sure it’s ok to ask for things. But sometimes I have no clue what to ask for.

Mom told me that one thing she always prayed was that we’d get caught – that whenever we did something wrong, we wouldn’t get away with it.

(It worked. I never got away with anything.)

(Maybe it’s because there were six siblings around to tattle.)

(Maybe it’s because God was actually listening to my Mom. Everybody listens to Moms. It’s a law or something.)

Not long ago, during one of my Beth Moore homework days, I found a verse that David prayed over Solomon. And I fell in love with it. David was not perfect by any means. But the Bible says he was a man after God’s heart. And if it was good enough for him to pray over his son, Solomon, who became the wisest man who ever lived, then I figure it’s probably ok for me to pray over my boy.

“Give my son Solomon a whole heart to keep and to carry out all Your commandments, Your decrees, and Your statues….”                1 Chronicles 29:19 (HCSB)

That pretty much sums it up, doesn’t it? Not that it’s the only scripture I pray over him, but it says more than I ever could.

I also love the entire chapter of Psalm 91. God is our protector. He personally covers us. He will also send His angels to walk with us so we don’t so much as hit our foot on a rock. I don’t know about you, but I have full confidence in the protection under the shadow of the Almighty and the guard of His angels. If God cares about something so small as stubbing our toe on a rock, He’s definitely thinking about the big things.

There are more. And I know there are many I am missing. I’d love to hear some of the specific things you pray for your children. Details, people, details! What do you pray for your son? Your daughter? Even for your entire family?

Come on, let’s hear them!

  2. I really enjoyed this post! I have a 1 week old, so right now my prayers are more survival related :-) That she will eat, sleep, and breath well. But, I also thank the Lord that she is not mine, but his, and we were chosen divinely to take care of her on this earth. I ask for wisdom as a parent in all the mundane and major decisions that come my way. I also pray for her future friends and mate.

I love the one about praying a hedge of protection around your children to protect them from the wrong kinds of people in their life. Now that I have a teenager, I pray that a LOT! But also pray it for my 11 year old and 1 year old.
I also pray that they would love the Lord with all their heart, soul, and mind.
There are so many things to pray for them....
I have a book by Stormie Omartian- The Power of a Praying Parent...very good guidlines for praying over specific situations.
I too pray that my children would get caught when they do wrong-- and God has proved faithful in that area.
I love the priviledge of praying for my kids and I will use what you posted on how David prayed for Solomon in the future. Thanks for sharing!
