Eureka!

I have found it! The perfect name for #2 slapped me upside the head last night. Husband and I were watching TV, and my memory was triggered by a commercial, of all things. We’d just been talking about this dilemma and so I shared my epiphany with Husband. He agreed that it would be a good name for #2.

The name I am thinking of is a genus of plant. It is extremely diverse in its uses, including furniture, dyes, paper, and artist charcoals. Its different varieties grow to enormous heights, are extremely strong, and live in various places from artic to tropical regions.

This is parallel to #2 in many ways. She is a strong person physically, mentally, and emotionally. She is diverse in her talents – things like getting a 90-something on her college math exam last week, caring for little kids, giving great advice to her peers, and having the skill it takes to train and ride horses like a pro.

The name is the title character in one of Husband’s favorite movies of all time, directed by Ron Howard and written by George Lucas. It came out in 1988, so #2 has probably never seen it. This character is the hero, of course, and has to save someone from the evil queen. Nominated for 2 Oscars, it was considered to be one of the better fantasy movies of all time. Of course, that has nothing to do with the fact that the title character is indeed, a dwarf. By the way, I was grilled as to why this movie is not currently in our collection.

#2 is a hero, of course. I don’t know about saving people from evil queens, but she’s managed a few feats of strength in her day. And I’d go ahead and say she’s one of the best sisters around. I don’t have any little golden statues of a naked man hiding himself with a sword, but if I did, she could definitely have it…um, I mean win it.

If you don’t know what name I’ve chosen by now, you’re either under the age of 20 or you don’t watch fantasy/sci-fi movies. So maybe you should go to Blockbuster and rent Willow. Pin It

I'm under 20 AND I don't watch sci fi or what ever that is. I was gonna call her scamer after the totally awesome penguin but mostly after scamper the famous barrel horse. I think scamper was short too but I don't remember I'll have to look it up

  2. WILLOW!!! I LOVE that movie! I actually saw it at the drive in here when it came out....wow. I was also pleased that I was able to name the movie before you revealed it at the end of your post. :)

    Great name.

  3. My sci-fi is limited to high class-STAR TREK. So...is Willow the name for #2 or just the reference for discovering the name????
Leave it to me to be confused when you use a MOVIE as your basis of thought! I never get the movie quotes!

Again, I ask why we don't have the movie in our library yet? Is it on DVD? If so then we need it!

  7. and, is Willow considered sci-fi?? I would've put it under the "80s Fantasy Movie" category.....along with Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, The Neverending Story, Legend.....and the like....

  8. Well - I consider myself a LITTLE savvy here. I have at least seen Neverending Story!!!!But I don't remember any of the lines or the names of the characters!

  9. You're right, Sarah J, it's actually considered a "fantasy" movie, but the sci-fi community loved it, as I recall. Around our house, they sort of fall into the same category - because they both require the use of imagination!
