Surviving Epic Storm ‘10

We made it through. It was an epic storm though (and this is an epic post), because it seemed to last forever (Just like this post. You might want to grab a snack.). Everything started Thursday afternoon and went strong until late Friday night. Even by Sunday we were still cooped up in the house with roads too yucky to venture out. (Husband slid into church, but Caedmon and I stayed home and participated online.)

I can’t say that I wasn’t a little rattled to get up on Friday morning and it still be freezing rain/sleeting instead of snowing, but by 11am or so, it was snowing. We ended up with a good 6” or more of snow at our house, covering a sheet of ice at least a half inch thick. We never lost electricity, thankfully. And most of those who did got it back relatively quickly.

So here’s how we filled our time at home.

We played with beans – for a whole hour. DSC08462

We buried his hands… DSC08467 DSC08486 We buried his feet…DSC08456 He tried to bury his head…DSC08494 And he, well, I don’t really know what he was trying to do here.DSC08506 Caedmon insisted on going outside on Friday morning. This was just after the snow had started, and I wasn’t keen on going out. So he went out by himself. With no coat. Because at that moment if he couldn’t do it himself, it wasn’t getting done. And I stayed inside and took pictures. (No, he didn’t stay out long.)DSC08508 We played with animals! And blocks, somehow.DSC08536 I busted a “’prise” out of the dollar spot stash.DSC08553 After about 4 inches of snow (and an eternity inside), we went out to play. DSC08563 DSC08573I tried to teach Caedmon how to make a snow angel. He wasn’t enthused. DSC08589 And Oz? He stayed inside. Pansy.DSC08569 Saturday we went out in the front yard, but Husband was busy clearing the driveway and I was trying to keep up with a boy and a dog and help with the driveway, so there are no pictures. Let’s face it, this post would be even longer if I had taken some, so it’s probably a good thing I didn’t.

We did, however, make snow cream after lunch. Of course the boy loved it.DSC08639 DSC08655

After all the time outside Saturday morning, I did not want to go back out in the afternoon. But of course the boy did. So I appeased him by letting him play with snow in the kitchen sink. And this time I added some food coloring for some extra fun.DSC08662 DSC08669 Sunday was a mish-mash of what-can-we-do-to-pass-the-time and about a thousand trips to the potty, at which time Caedmon would say, “I go pirst!” (I go first.) Which actually means, “Mother, I would prefer to do things myself and don’t want you anywhere in the general vicinity. No, you may not turn the light on for me or stand in the hall and watch. I will pee in the dark if necessary and I’ll scream for you when I get my pants caught around my knees. Or when I need you to hand me the soap. But don’t even think about squeezing the pump for me, for I will do that myself as well.” I don’t think I’ll have to worry about him living here until he’s 40. Not that it would be bad, I’m just sayin’ – the boy is a smidge independent.

Also, Husband made a fort for he and Caedmon to play in. DSC08739And since Caedmon doesn’t quite understand the intricacies of not knocking things down, it was definitely an exercise in patience.

And there were some more blocks.DSC08763 At which time the horse wore some sort of contraption on his head.DSC08784 And what snow-weekend would be complete without a Sock Monkey tea party?DSC08801

And even though we grew weary of each other while being stuck in the house, I sure do love this little face. Snot crust and all.DSC08721

I’m hoping we can get out and go to the grocery store today. Not that I’m in desperate need, because I did some serious stocking up last week, but I feel the need to get out of the house. And buy new dog food for Oz. But that’s a story for another time.

A SIDE NOTE COMPLETELY UNRELATED TO EPIC STORM ‘10: I was excited to see Michael Buble on SNL. I love his music. But I have a hard time watching him. Why? Because I’ve seen him do some interviews and I don’t think he’s the type of person I’d like to hang out with. And it disturbs me to like someone’s music but not them.

I was hoping for some redemption, but nooooo. And to prove my point, he sang a great song, yet danced around like an idiot while doing it.

ANOTHER SIDE NOTE: I am beyond excited that LOST starts back Tuesday night. I’m practically giddy. Giddy, I tell you. Topped off by a new The Office on Thursday (finally). My head may explode.

THE LAST SIDE NOTE, I PROMISE: Don’t forget about Photo Album Rejects tomorrow!

  1. LOST!!!!! I have a bedtime plan for Tuesday night, since Aaron and I both will want to focus on the show the kids need to be asleep by 8pm. Which also means they will fight it tooth and nail. My plan is to forgo a nap that day. And have a early bedtime :-) I pray it works.

  2. My Lord, do we have the same independent child?! Heaven forbid I do anything for him. "I do it by self!" he keeps telling me, while patting his tummy for emphasis. This morning, I put the side rail down on his bed and held my arms out for him to come to me, only he bypassed me and went to the corner of his bed and said he would get out "by self", which he proceeded to do. Lovely.

  3. Encourage their independence! You will be so glad that you have a child / young adult who doesn't need their parent's help for every little step they take. Remember. The goal is for them to LEAVE and function on their own. The only way that can happen is if they are SELF confident. Run with it!
