Takin’ It To The Mattresses

One of the great features of a website service I use is that I can see how people find my site.

In other words, I can tell how many people have clicked over from other blogs, how people found me on Google, etc. Sometimes people are specifically looking for me, and other times they’re searching a topic and click over here. This one I wrote for my Dad is particularly popular. But there’s one Google search that brings more traffic to my blog than any other.

Care to guess which one?

I was shocked and surprised to find out that the most-clicked Google Search for my blog is for this post: Pee Pee + Mattress = Not Good.

Apparently there is an epidemic of pee pee on mattresses out there. Oh, the humanity!

So after checking, I realized that I never actually gave the solution for our mattress problem. It’s a shame that people can come to see they’re not alone in their mattress emergency, yet still not find a solution. Well, here it is.

As I stated before, Husband did a complete scouring of the internet to find out the best method to clean a mattress. And this one kept coming up. We used it and it worked like a charm for our big pillow-top mattress. I’ve also since used the same method on other things.

Basically, here’s what you do in case you should ever have a puddle of pee pee on a mattress you aren’t able to go out and replace instantly.

1. Use towels (or whatever) to soak up as much of the liquid as possible. Seriously, put some weight on it. Stand on your bed. You can do it – your mother won’t be watching.

2. Get the largest bottle of hydrogen peroxide you can possibly find. Pour it slowly over the stain/wet spot, pouring outside the margins of the stain. Soak it. When you think you’ve done enough, keep going. Basically, you want the peroxide to soak all the way through the mattress to the other side over the entire stain area, plus a nice margin around the outside to allow for spreading. Let it set about 5 minutes.

3. Using clean towels, soak up as much of the peroxide as you can. (Remember, it can bleach stuff.)

4. Stand the mattress up if possible, with air circulating on both sides. Place in a safe place to dry, preferably with a fan blowing on it. Allow to dry completely on both sides. (We allowed an extra day or two for the insides to dry.)

5. After dry, if there’s still an odor, sprinkle baking soda on the spot and rub it into the mattress. Allow it to sit for a while, then vacuum. (We didn’t have to do this step – the peroxide took care of it.)

Overall, I think it was a 3-4 day process to allow the mattress enough time to dry completely since it was so thick and a pillow-top. But it totally saved our bed. There’s no stain. There’s no odor.

So there it is. Google away. There’s finally a solution to your pee pee problem.

  3. Thanks for reminding me. I'd intended to do that and had forgotten.
