Trash Talk

I am not a rebellious person by nature. And I am not one of those people who believe the rules don’t apply to them. I am typically a rule follower. Unless the rules are stupid.

That’s pretty much the way I feel about our trash situation. And I’ve held my tongue on it long enough.

Because I have so many pressing things to discuss.

Like most rule-following, law-abiding citizens, I pay the trash company to come haul off my trash each week. Every Tuesday, to be exact. And I’m not opposed to paying for the service. As long as they hold up their end of the deal.

(There was that questionable period in which my trash cans frequently ended up down the street.)

Three summers ago, the rules changed. The illustrious trash company became extremely picky about the refuse they will and won’t accept. And don’t even get me started on how you have to pay extra each month in order to recycle. (I don’t, by the way. I know, I’m evil.)

Our problem has been lawn clippings. They used to pick up your lawn clippings in the giant paper bags. But three years ago, they decided they would only accept your lawn waste if you put it in their Green Bags.

The bags you have to purchase from them at a cost of $27.97 for 25 bags.

I refused. For the past several summers, we’ve gotten very creative at getting rid of our grass clippings. There was no way I was going to pay over a dollar a bag for the trash guys to pick them up when they’re already coming to my house.

This year, however, I decided I’d bucked the system long enough. I told Husband I’d go pick up some Green Bags. So I called to find out how to get them, and was told I had to go out to the office at the landfill.

Oh, but not only are they out in the middle of nowhere, (duh, landfill), but they don’t open until 9, they’re closed for an hour and a half for lunch, then close for the day at 4pm.

But we didn’t know of the 4pm closing time the first time we went to get bags. We drove all the way out there only to find out it was 6 minutes past 4pm and they were shut down for the day.

I wish I could shut things down at 4pm.

I finally made it back out there during the 15 minutes a day they’re open. And you know what I saw when I got there? Their “Employee Of The Month” parking space.

It was empty.DSC03379Appropriate, no?

And here’s what I got for my trouble and $27.97. A roll of green garbage bags. With blue twist-ties. DSC03439I’m sure it’s the blue twist ties that drives up the price.

  1. Man, I could write a post of my own about those people. It would sound very much the same. I loved paying them $20 a month to not pick up the trash in the house we weren't living in, and the only way to stop would be to go buy some equally expensive yellow bags AT the place (19 hours away from me). Or how they charge you some outrageous amount of money to use your credit card. Or how the parking lot looks like a garbage dump itself. I can surely feel your pain!

You could always take said grass clippings to a house with horses... then they would be recycled!

  3. I can't count the vast number of bags of grass that NLB dutifully hauled home for the horses. The problem is that if we don't get it out there the same day, it's no good for them. And there's no way I could fit all that grass into my Xterra.
